Five unusual reasons to visit the Isle of Skye

24th May 2018

We’ve created a quick list to help with planning your trip including some activities you may not have heard of before

The reasons to visit Skye are the same as they have always been – the incredible topography and scenery (multiple films have been shot there and 3 photos on our website are from Skye), the sumptuous local food to be had at many different restaurants, the Talisker distillery, the beautiful hotels and the wonderful people.

In typical Away From the Ordinary style this list is ‘out of the ordinary’ and may not be what you would expect!

1: Go fishing, hunting or foraging

There are many local experts on the island who can take you fishing, hunting or foraging on Skye. We would recommend coupling this with a good old cook up where you can learn how to cook what you gathered from your day out.

2: Afternoon tea

We love going to Kinloch Lodge for a traditional afternoon tea. It is served in their drawing rooms where they bring you a tiered stand laden with delicious freshly prepared sandwiches, home-baked scones, homemade jams, cakes, and patisseries.

3: Get out on the water

Although the Isle of Skye is connected to the Mainland by a bridge, it is still (as the name suggests) an island, and what better way than exploring it by sea. There are various trips that can be organised, whether it’s to discover uninhabited parts of the island, visit other islands, view puffins and sea eagles, or practice your fishing talents.

4: Whisky, Oysters and a Ceilidh

Why not head down to Carbost to have beautiful fresh seafood at the Oyster Shed, do a tour and a tasting at the Talisker Distillery and then, if it’s a Friday night, go to the Old Inn for some traditional folk music in a friendly atmosphere. All 3 are within walking distance of each other.

5: Elope

Skye and the west coast of Scotland are beautiful places to elope to (Scotland was voted the most beautiful country in the world in 2018). Get out and about just because you can or for a special occasion. There’s plenty of talented photographers and romantic hotels and restaurants to ensure it is an elopement of a lifetime.
